Suddenly there was a police car, sirens blaring, then one more and a police van. With a screech of brakes they drew up behind and alongside the suspicious Merc. Officers jumped out. They moved stiffly, guns levelled at the car. Geronlanos ducked down behind a low parapet by the hotel door, his gun out again. A couple of tourists came out from the hotel and I waved them back furiously. Didn’t feel the urge to take shelter myself, though.

Two men got out of the Merc, and were thrown violently against the side of the van. They were roughly searched, then handcuffed and bundled into the police cars, one to each. I heard raised voices. Then both cars sped away with sirens on.

“I’ll let you know who they are,” Geronlanos said.

He beckoned to his own driver and took his leave.

I was impressed. Tougher than I thought.
